I have always wanted to have a surprise birthday party, but it's not really one of those things you can plan or even ask for, else the whole point is ruined.  Last night, my fabulous, wonderful, amazing friends managed to completely take me by surprise with a belated birthday party.  I can't remember the last time I was so shocked or had so much fun and I can't believe how much love these guys showed me last night.


And this is the person responsible:

My boyfriend has aspirations to evil mastermind, hand to God.  But in the best possible way.

Today is the one-year anniversary of when my boyfriend and I first starting going out.  In this past year, he has been there for me again and again and has supported me unquestioningly and unconditionally through some of the hardest times I've ever been through.  He's a talented actor, a gifted writer, an incredible friend, a wonderful boyfriend, and the most amazing guy I know, and I'm so thankful that he's in my life.

I know a lot of my cookies look similar sometimes, but these little babies are so good - I'm calling them spiced honey puffs.  They're crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy in the middle and they're faintly sweet and full of ginger and cinnamon.

Not pictured: how I tried to soften the butter in the oven beforehand and forgot about it.  My entire apartment filled up with smoke - I thought the fire alarm was going to go off.  There was a lot of fretful dancing up and down and attacking of the oven with a wet scrubber to get the butter off (and half melting the sponge in the process.)

The cookies were still worth it.

As a friend of mine put it, I'm not one to rely on rodents as weather forecasters.  But the fact remains - this has been a very spring-like day.  This picture can't capture how mild it's been or how warm the breeze has felt, but it was nice enough out today that I wore sandals and a short sleeved shirt and spent the afternoon sipping coffee in the sun.
